Animal Welfare Policy

Canelones Foods has a strong commitment to the humane treatment of animals.

We believe that training and education are essential in developing programs that will continuously improve handling of animals.

Recent research shows that simple and comprehensive methods of animal handling will prevent suffering of animals and reduce accidents to man. As a result, meat quality may improve and losses caused by bruising and falls can be avoided.

Actions and progress

Progress in this field involves strong investments in state of the art facilities, training of employees, implementation of AW programme and monitoring of improvements.

Quiet and safe handling of cattle is now a result of all these actions put together. Facilities have been modified in accordance to Dr. Temple Grandin ’s designs, including: races and corrals, non slip floors, crowd pen and curved chutes. Finally, a head and body restrainer was incorporated under her recommendation.

Results are excellent: prods have been eliminated and replaced by flags; no shouting or livestock vocalizations are heard. Cattle walk smoothly and safely under humane handling conditions. Our progress inspires us to continue working on animal welfare issues related to safety and quality.
